What do I do in the event of a GYN emergency?
When do I go directly to the hospital?
- Vaginal Bleeding – if bleeding so much (as to saturate) more than 2 pads per hour for 2 hours or more
- Pelvic Pain – if severe or persistent and/or accompanied by fever

What do I do in the event of an OB emergency?
When do I go directly to the hospital?
- Pain – not relieved with rest or Tylenol OTC, that has persisted for more than 2 hours or is associated with nausea, vomiting, fever, etc.
- Contractions – Preterm (before 37 weeks) – having more than 4 contractions an hour for 2 hours or cramping lasting for more than 2 hours, even with rest & hydration (drinking water) Term – (37 weeks and beyond) – having regular painful contractions every 3-5 minutes for 1 1/2 to 2 hours
- Leaking Fluid – when unsure if it is urine, discharge or amniotic fluid (even without contractions) or a “gush” of fluid
- Vaginal Bleeding – Occasionally following a pelvic exam, it is possible for you to have some spotting or light bleeding BUT if the bleeding is heavy OR you are just having vaginal bleeding for no specific reason – GO TO DIRECTLY TO HOSPITAL ER
- Fetal Movement – If your baby does not seem to be moving as much, please perform a “kick count”. Lie still on your side, without any distractions (i.e. TV, etc.) and count fetal movements. If you get 10 distinct movements of any type, in 2 hours – you can be reassured. If not – GO DIRECTLY TO TRIAGE. If you are concerned about fetal movement, DO NOT WAIT until your next appointment, even if it is scheduled for the next day.
- Mucous Plug – is not a good indicator or labor and it is not necessary for you to bring it with you. If it is associated with a foul smell or greenish color, call the office during office hours. After office hours – GO DIRECTLY TO TRIAGE PLEASE REMEMBER – PROMPT EVALUATION IS IMPORTANT TO PREVENT A POTENTIAL PROBLEM!
